uPhysio

Videoprototype, WS1112

What is it?
uPhysio is a tablet application simplifying the creation and selection of home-made exercises by the therapist and afterwards showing the patient detailed instruction videos. Further it gives him direct feedback during the execution of exercises. Moreover it creates statistics increasing his motivation and showing his personal progress. It also gives the therapist the means to check on his patient and to change his exercise plan accordingly.

How does it work?
After the treatment the therapist can choose individual exercises for the patient he is meant to do at home by clicking on a predefined set of them. Based on patient’s condition he can also adjust the intensity and the rep count. Afterwards the plan is immediately available in the patient’s account. He now has access to detailed videos and descriptions.
Furthermore the application includes a reminder function helping the patient to do his exercises regularly. The system is equipped with a motion tracking camera to observe the execution of his exercises and to correct him as the circumstances require.

When finishing his ‘training’ the application shows his success or failure. This gives the patient the required motivation and stimulus. After arriving back at the practice the physiotherapist can see the crunch points or praise his patient.

The application is also equipped with a reminder function which reminds the patient to do his exercises if a longer period of time passed without him doing them.
The position recognition checks if the patient is in the right postion in front of the tablet so that it can supervise his motions.
During the ‘training’ uPhysio has an auto correction function that always gives the patient feedback in the form of correcting his moves, this is implemented by kinect build in the tablet’s camera.
At the end of each training session the patient gets personal feedback on his efforts in the form of diagrams and different levels.

Future

The application uPhysio could also be used by fitness centers or in other facilities with focus on physical recovery.

UPhysio – Concept

Concept, WS1112

With the information we gathered during our interviews we started to sort our findings. Through the analysis of this data we discovered two core problems.

On the one hand there are some issues regarding the administration and on the other hand the patients have difficulties remembering the correct sequence of home exercises and their execution. Further the therapists would like to give more exercises to achieve a greater variety.

We concentrated our efforts on the exercise problem and came up with an idea to simplify both the creation of exercise plans and the instruction, control and motivation of patients at home.

Our application UPhysio realizes all these aspects by showing the patient detailed instruction videos selected individually by the therapist, giving him direct feedback during the execution. Furthermore it creates statistics for the patient to motivate and show personal progress. It also gives the therapist the means to check on his patient and to change his exercise plan accordingly.

User Research: Physical Therapy

User Research, WS1112

We made our user research in the medical sector as it seemed to us being an unexplored field referring to new technologies. Our interviews took place in a doctor´s office of a physiotherapist in Munich-Aubing called “Physioforsoul”, it is a smaller one which helps primarily older people on their road to recovery and physical improvement.

Antonia Kollmann, the head of the doctor´s office invited us to a round tour through her office and showed us the treatment rooms and the equipment used for the physiotherapy.

Besides physiotherapy also manual therapy, lymph drainage, massage and special treatment is offered at “Physioforsoul”.

The fields of application are stress/hecticness, tension and burden of any kind.

Antonia and her colleague Lotte Groeneweg both tell us that the hands are their most important instruments in their job. They are very enthusiastic about their profession.

It is the fact of helping the people with their physical problems and seeing them getting healthy what makes them come to fulfilment.
