MySchoolbox is an online collaborative application for primary school teachers providing digital organization of teaching materials, automated planning, lessons preparation and automated printing into the classroom.

The teachers upload their material to My Schoolbox where it is available for all colleagues. When someone wants to create their schedule for the coming week he gets worksheet suggestions based on the general lesson plan for each subject. When completed they can immediately print their records to their respective classrooms instead of the common teachers’ room. After class the sheets can also be rated, so the quality of the used material is steadily improved. All this can be done at home, at work or on the go.

The benefits are closely linked to digitalization which saves space and time and enables mobility. The search for material is simplified and the teamwork is strenghened. Since all the steps of lesson peparation are combined in one tool certain tasks can be automated. My Schoolbox undertakes the creation of the weeks documentation, the sorting by corriculum and sending the material to the printer.

For the next steps we have a broad variety of challenges we can tackle. The most interesting next feature is the integration of internal communication between the teachers and external communication from the teacher to the parents in our app. This would replace the huge pile of paper that gets wasted every day by printing everything that needs to be officially communicated. Another interesting topic is the digitalization of the whole evaluation process. Starting from the automated blue-penciling of exams to translating school certificates for parents with migrant background.

Over the last few days we did a lot of work on different steps towards our current concept. We started of on tuesday last week doing our user research with primary teachers here in Munich. Over the next few days we went through a lot of different ideas which each tackled a different problem. With the help of the provided tools we got deeper into their problems and forged our concept which can now be roughly described as the following:  A plattform for teachers that will feature a school wide printing queue, a bavarian wide shared storage for lesson material, a post lesson rating system and a fully automated planning system tied to the curriculum. This will give the teachers the opportunity to collaborate more easily and save time, paper and storage space. We are strongly looking forward to the video prototyping that will take place over the next few days.

User research: Primary school teachers

On Tuesday we were visiting a primary school in eastern Munich to get some answers to our interview questions and to get an idea of their day-to-day routine.

The day began early at 7:15 am in the teachers’ room which means for most of the teachers waiting in line to get copies from the only copier. Then at 8 am it was time for some math in second grade, which was amusing to observe.

During the day we could thankfully borrow some of the teachers‘ free time for some interrogation. We interviewed 3 teachers individually and 2 together, which turned out to be a pretty good idea.

In the afternoon a part of the group had the chance to take part in an e-training for teachers at a school computer, which was in fact a two-hour tutorial about how to use a new website for teaching materials and other tools. The school computer’s FlashPlayer was so old-school that the live broadcasted video lecture had to be restarted only every 5 minutes since the system admin didn’t allow to bring the system up to date.
